In 2021, the Asia-Pacific paper machinery market increased by 3% to $X, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible contraction. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, paper machinery production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 3.7%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.
Paper Machinery Exports
Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, shipments abroad of machinery for making paper or paperboard decreased by -14.2% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 78%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, paper machinery exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a noticeable expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 70% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 86% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), mixing up a 9.7% share of total exports. India (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the machinery for making paper or paperboard exports, with a CAGR of +20.3% from 2012 to 2021. India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Taiwan (Chinese) (-13.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +63 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest paper machinery supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with an 8.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China stood at +10.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (-12.9% per year) and India (-1.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2021, growing by 23% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per unit), while Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, supplies from abroad of machinery for making paper or paperboard decreased by -9.6% to X units, falling for the third consecutive year after three years of growth. Overall, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, paper machinery imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 63% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of machinery for making paper or paperboard, namely India, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Vietnam, represented more than half of total import. South Korea (X units) held the next position in the ranking, followed by China (X units) and Japan (X units). All these countries together took near 18% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +22.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest paper machinery importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Vietnam ($X), India ($X) and South Korea ($X), with a combined 46% share of total imports.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +25.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2021, surging by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 47% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
