Malt Market Size in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, the Asia-Pacific malt market increased by 1.5% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption, however, recorded a perceptible slump. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, malt production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a noticeable slump. Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, approx. X tons of malt (not roasted) were exported in Asia-Pacific; growing by 14% compared with the previous year's figure. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 16% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, malt exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 22%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Australia (X tons) represented the largest exporter of malt (not roasted), creating 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), mixing up a 30% share of total exports. India (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Australia increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, India (+31.1%) and China (+9.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +31.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of China (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Australia (-13.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X) remains the largest malt supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Australia was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+6.4% per year) and India (+24.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a slight setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (-0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Malt imports reduced to X tons in 2021, with a decrease of -10.1% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 11%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, malt imports reduced to $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 14%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of malt (not roasted), namely Japan, Vietnam and Thailand, represented more than half of total import. South Korea (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by the Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Cambodia (X tons). All these countries together held near 25% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by the Philippines (with a CAGR of +7.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest malt importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Japan ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Thailand ($X), together accounting for 61% of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, the Philippines, Cambodia and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 25%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +8.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 2.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 5.8% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Vietnam ($X per ton) and Japan ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) and Singapore ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
