Mate Market Size in Asia-Pacific
After two years of decline, the Asia-Pacific mate market increased by 7.8% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced reduction. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Mate Production in Asia-Pacific
In value terms, mate production contracted modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Afghanistan (X tons) remains the largest mate producing country in Asia-Pacific, accounting for 87% of total volume. Moreover, mate production in Afghanistan exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Myanmar (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Afghanistan stood at +2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Myanmar (+0.8% per year) and Singapore (+8.6% per year).
Mate Exports
Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2022, approx. X tons of mate were exported in Asia-Pacific; with a decrease of -16.8% on 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, mate exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports saw a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 96%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Afghanistan was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 57% of total exports. Singapore (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 24% share, followed by Hong Kong SAR (4.9%). The following exporters - Thailand (X tons), Australia (X tons), New Zealand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - together made up 8% of total exports.
Exports from Afghanistan decreased at an average annual rate of -18.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+28.2%), New Zealand (+25.1%), Vietnam (+8.4%) and Singapore (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +28.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Australia (-5.0%) and Thailand (-17.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+20 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (+4.8 p.p.) and New Zealand (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Afghanistan (-28.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest mate supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were Singapore ($X), Afghanistan ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X), with a combined 65% share of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +22.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+14.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Mate Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
For the third year in a row, Asia-Pacific recorded decline in overseas purchases of mate, which decreased by -6.2% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, mate imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 51%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, China (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) was the major importer of mate in Asia-Pacific, making up 59% of total import. New Zealand (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Japan (X tons). All these countries together took near 21% share of total imports. Bhutan (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Bhutan (with a CAGR of +52.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest mate importing markets in Asia-Pacific were China ($X), Australia ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X), together accounting for 48% of total imports. Brunei Darussalam, Japan, New Zealand and Bhutan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.
Among the main importing countries, Bhutan, with a CAGR of +56.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the import price increased by 29%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Bhutan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
