In 2021, the Asia-Pacific MDF market decreased by -1.1% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, MDF production stood at $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, shipments abroad of MDF increased by 35% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, MDF exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
China was the major exporter of MDF in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports amounting to X cubic meters, which was near 54% of total exports in 2021. Thailand (X cubic meters) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by New Zealand (X cubic meters). All these countries together took approx. 38% share of total exports. Indonesia (X cubic meters) and Malaysia (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Thailand (with a CAGR of +13.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest MDF supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Thailand ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by New Zealand, with an 8.8% share.
In China, MDF exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Thailand (+11.7% per year) and New Zealand (+4.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per cubic meter, picking up by 5.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 8%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per cubic meter), while Thailand ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+0.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, overseas purchases of MDF were finally on the rise to reach X cubic meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 16%. The volume of import peaked at X cubic meters in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
In value terms, MDF imports soared to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Vietnam (X cubic meters) and Japan (X cubic meters) represented the largest importers of MDF in Asia-Pacific, together amounting to approx. 44% of total imports. China (X cubic meters) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Korea (8.4%), Indonesia (5.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (5%), Malaysia (4.7%) and Australia (4.5%). The Philippines (X cubic meters) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by South Korea (with a CAGR of +26.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest MDF importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Japan ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 60% share of total imports. Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), the Philippines and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
South Korea, with a CAGR of +20.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per cubic meter, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
