Melon Market Size in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific melon market shrank slightly to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Melon Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, melon production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 61% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of melon production was China (X tons), accounting for 79% of total volume. Moreover, melon production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, India (X tons), tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Afghanistan (X tons), with a 5% share.

In China, melon production expanded at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: India (+6.0% per year) and Afghanistan (+14.9% per year).

In 2022, the average yield of melons in Asia-Pacific contracted modestly to X tons per ha, flattening at the previous year's figure. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of melons production in Asia-Pacific fell slightly to X ha, waning by -1.7% against the year before. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 10% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then reduced slightly in the following year.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, overseas shipments of melons were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 70%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, melon exports surged to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 70% of total exports in 2022. Australia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 7.4% share, followed by Myanmar (6.7%) and Afghanistan (5%). The following exporters - Malaysia (X tons) and India (X tons) - each recorded a 7.7% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to melon exports from China stood at +5.2%. At the same time, Myanmar (+48.0%), Afghanistan (+21.1%), India (+9.6%) and Australia (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +48.0% from 2012-2022. Malaysia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Myanmar (+6.4 p.p.) and Afghanistan (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Australia, Malaysia and China saw its share reduced by -2.7%, -2.9% and -4.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest melon supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with an 8.5% share of total exports. It was followed by Myanmar, with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +9.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (+1.7% per year) and Myanmar (+41.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -6.2% against the previous year. Export price indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon export price decreased by -10.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when the export price increased by 52%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Afghanistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Melon imports declined dramatically to X tons in 2022, waning by -17% compared with the year before. Overall, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

In value terms, melon imports declined modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Japan (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Brunei Darussalam (X tons) were the main importers of melons, together mixing up 86% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Brunei Darussalam (with a CAGR of +18.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest melon importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Hong Kong SAR ($X), Japan ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Hong Kong SAR, with a CAGR of +14.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 18% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
