Millet Market Size in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific millet market rose to $X in 2022, growing by 1.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Millet Production in Asia-Pacific

The total production indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 64% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

India (X tons) remains the largest millet producing country in Asia-Pacific, accounting for 78% of total volume. Moreover, millet production in India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, China (X tons), fivefold.

In India, millet production expanded at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: China (+4.4% per year) and Nepal (+0.3% per year).

The average millet yield stood at X tons per ha in 2022, approximately equating 2021. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the yield increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the millet yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The millet harvested area reduced to X ha in 2022, shrinking by -3.1% against the year before. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a slight downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 6.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to millet production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, the amount of millet exported in Asia-Pacific rose significantly to X tons, increasing by 10% on the previous year. Overall, exports, however, showed a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 21%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, millet exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

India prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. China (X tons) and Australia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of millet. Australia (-8.0%) and China (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India increased by +8.4 percentage points.

In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest millet supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 79% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in India totaled +1.5%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (-3.4% per year) and Australia (+0.9% per year).

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Millet Imports

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of millet, when their volume increased by 11% to X tons. Overall, imports enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.

In value terms, millet imports contracted to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 46%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Pakistan (X tons) represented the key importer of millet, creating 34% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Nepal (11%), Thailand (6.3%), the Philippines (6.1%), South Korea (5.7%), China (5.3%) and Japan (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +48.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X), South Korea ($X) and the Philippines ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 47% share of total imports. Pakistan, Japan, Thailand, Nepal and China lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

China, with a CAGR of +40.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -20.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 24%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
