Imports into Japan increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+11.5%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+10.7%), China (+9.1%), South Korea (+8.1%), the Philippines (+7.8%), Pakistan (+6.2%), Malaysia (+6.2%), Bangladesh (+6.1%), Thailand (+5.4%), Australia (+4.9%) and India (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-1.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+2.6 p.p.), South Korea (+2 p.p.), Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan and Indonesia saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -4.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 63% share of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, China, with a CAGR of +20.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.0%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
