In 2022, the Asia-Pacific newsprint market decreased by -7.4% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In 2022, shipments abroad of newsprint was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a five-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a deep setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country
South Korea represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 46% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), Australia (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together committing a 44% share of total exports. The following exporters - China (X tons) and India (X tons) - together made up 7.2% of total exports.
Exports from South Korea decreased at an average annual rate of -15.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, China (+8.2%) and Thailand (+4.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +8.2% from 2012-2022. India experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (-3.1%), Malaysia (-11.7%) and Indonesia (-13.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Thailand (+9.2 p.p.), Australia (+8 p.p.), China (+3.6 p.p.) and India (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-2.4 p.p.) and South Korea (-19.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the largest newsprint supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 13% share.
In South Korea, newsprint exports plunged by an average annual rate of -14.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Indonesia (-11.2% per year) and China (+18.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 15% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, newsprint export price increased by +61.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2022, purchases abroad of newsprint decreased by -14.5% to X tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 6.2%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, newsprint imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep contraction. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
India (X tons) and China (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together generating 72% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Australia (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +13.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, India ($X), China ($X) and Australia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together comprising 78% of total imports.
China, with a CAGR of +13.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 38% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Pakistan (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
