The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, optical fiber cables exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 84% of total exports in 2022. Japan (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), South Korea (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to optical fiber cables exports from China stood at +17.8%. At the same time, Hong Kong SAR (+20.2%), Singapore (+4.9%) and Japan (+3.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Hong Kong SAR emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +20.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Korea (-5.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China increased by +24 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest optical fiber cables supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 6.8% share.
In China, optical fiber cables exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+5.1% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+20.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 5.2%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
Optical fiber cables imports totaled X tons in 2022, stabilizing at 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +25.9% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, optical fiber cables imports expanded significantly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2022, the Philippines (X tons), distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), Indonesia (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) were the major importers of optical fiber cables, together constituting 74% of total imports. The following importers - Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Myanmar (X tons), Australia (X tons), India (X tons), Nepal (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and South Korea (X tons) - together made up 17% of total imports.
Imports into the Philippines increased at an average annual rate of +19.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nepal (+32.0%), Myanmar (+22.8%), Malaysia (+15.8%), Indonesia (+11.1%), Vietnam (+10.1%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.9%), Singapore (+7.4%), India (+6.5%), Hong Kong SAR (+5.1%) and South Korea (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nepal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +32.0% from 2012-2022. Thailand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (-4.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. The Philippines (+17 p.p.), Malaysia (+2.7 p.p.), Indonesia (+2.7 p.p.), Myanmar (+2.3 p.p.) and Nepal (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Hong Kong SAR, Australia and Thailand saw its share reduced by -3%, -6.1% and -9.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the Philippines ($X), Singapore ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 41% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR, Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, South Korea, Vietnam, India, Nepal and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.
Among the main importing countries, Nepal, with a CAGR of +28.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 6.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 8.3%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
