The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, drawing chalk exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +5.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, amounting to X units, which was near 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X units), comprising an 8.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Korea (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Thailand (X units) - together made up 8.9% of total exports.

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Vietnam (+37.1%) and Indonesia (+15.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +37.1% from 2012-2021. South Korea experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Thailand (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+5.6 p.p.), Vietnam (+2.2 p.p.) and China (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Thailand saw its share reduced by -2.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest drawing chalk supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 74% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 6.3% share.

In China, drawing chalk exports increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+4.8% per year) and Indonesia (+12.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2021, reducing by -4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded noticeable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 93%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per unit), while Indonesia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+6.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks increased by 8.3% to X units for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, saw a slight contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, drawing chalk imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 21%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Indonesia (X units), Australia (X units), China (X units), India (X units), South Korea (X units) and Japan (X units) was the major importer of pastels, drawing charcoals, writing or drawing chalks in Asia-Pacific, achieving 66% of total import. It was distantly followed by Vietnam (X units), committing a 5.1% share of total imports. Hong Kong SAR (X units), Thailand (X units), the Philippines (X units), Malaysia (X units), New Zealand (X units) and Singapore (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +16.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and Australia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 42% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, South Korea, India, Vietnam, Hong Kong SAR, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 49%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +22.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, surging by 12% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was China ($X per unit), while the Philippines ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+8.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
