After two years of growth, the Asia-Pacific persimmon market decreased by -2.3% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Persimmon Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, persimmon production fell slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +50.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 31%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of persimmon production, accounting for 87% of total volume. Moreover, persimmon production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Korea (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at +1.3%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: South Korea (-6.0% per year) and Japan (-2.6% per year).

In 2021, the average persimmon yield in Asia-Pacific stood at X tons per ha, approximately mirroring the year before. In general, the yield, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 5.4%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The persimmon harvested area declined slightly to X ha in 2021, almost unchanged from the year before. Overall, the harvested area, however, showed a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 5.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to persimmon production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2020, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

Persimmon Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, shipments abroad of persimmons decreased by -35.1% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon exports reduced sharply to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 52%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - South Korea (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) - together made up 4.7% of total exports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the persimmons exports, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012 to 2021. New Zealand (-1.2%) and South Korea (-14.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+34 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while New Zealand and South Korea saw its share reduced by -2.7% and -21.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest persimmon supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Zealand ($X), with a 6.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +20.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (+2.1% per year) and South Korea (-12.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -22.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Persimmon Imports

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of persimmons, when their volume decreased by -33.1% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 56%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then reduced notably in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon imports declined rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the major importer of persimmons in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was approx. 73% of total imports in 2021. Thailand (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (4.8%). Singapore (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Vietnam was also the fastest-growing in terms of the persimmons imports, with a CAGR of +18.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+10.1%) and Hong Kong SAR (+5.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Singapore (-4.2%) and Malaysia (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Vietnam (+32 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Hong Kong SAR, Singapore and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.5%, -8% and -14.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in Asia-Pacific, comprising 66% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Hong Kong SAR, with a 5.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Vietnam totaled +25.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+13.0% per year) and Hong Kong SAR (+12.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -11.4% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 14%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
