In 2022, the average pineapple yield in Asia-Pacific dropped modestly to X tons per ha, waning by -2.5% against the year before. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 5.3%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then contracted in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the harvested area of pineapples in Asia-Pacific dropped modestly to X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. In general, the harvested area recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 4.1%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Pineapple Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

After two years of decline, shipments abroad of pineapples increased by 12% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 90%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 75%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The Philippines prevails in exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 74% of total exports in 2022. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.8% share, followed by Thailand (8.2%) and Malaysia (4.6%). The following exporters - Indonesia (X tons) and India (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pineapple exports from the Philippines stood at -2.5%. At the same time, Indonesia (+55.1%), Thailand (+27.8%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+24.1%) and India (+7.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +55.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Taiwan (Chinese) (+7.9 p.p.), Thailand (+7.6 p.p.) and Indonesia (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the Philippines saw its share reduced by -14.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the largest pineapple supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 78% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 6.1% share.

In the Philippines, pineapple exports expanded at an average annual rate of +12.6% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Taiwan (Chinese) (+29.4% per year) and Thailand (+26.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, growing by 7.1% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Pineapple imports reduced modestly to X tons in 2022, approximately reflecting 2021. Total imports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +3.0% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pineapple imports stood at $X in 2022. Total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +11.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 13%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

China (X tons) and Japan (X tons) were the key importers of pineapples in 2022, amounting to approx. 43% and 34% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), generating a 14% share of total imports. Singapore (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and New Zealand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +21.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 91% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +22.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
