Pistachio Market Size in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific pistachio market fell markedly to $X in 2022, reducing by -29.4% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

Pistachio Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, pistachio production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 81%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

China (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of pistachio production, accounting for 79% of total volume. Moreover, pistachio production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Hong Kong SAR (X tons), fivefold. Afghanistan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 3.6% share.

In China, pistachio production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Hong Kong SAR (-7.6% per year) and Afghanistan (+2.9% per year).

The average pistachio yield contracted modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, declining by -2.7% against 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being observed in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the pistachio yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pistachios production in Asia-Pacific reduced slightly to X ha, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the harvested area increased by 6.4%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to pistachio production reached the maximum at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Pistachio Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, shipments abroad of pistachios decreased by -41.5% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports saw a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pistachio exports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 37%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The biggest shipments were from Hong Kong SAR (X tons), China (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons), together amounting to 85% of total export. It was distantly followed by Australia (X tons), making up a 9.8% share of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +12.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Afghanistan ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total exports.

Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +18.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 6.3% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, pistachio export price increased by +79.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 59% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Pistachio Imports

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Pistachio imports dropped rapidly to X tons in 2022, falling by -44.6% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pistachio imports dropped notably to $X in 2022. In general, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

China was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 41% of total imports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 20% share, followed by Vietnam (14%) and Pakistan (10%). Japan (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pistachio imports into China stood at +5.0%. At the same time, Pakistan (+41.8%), Thailand (+11.5%), India (+10.2%) and Japan (+5.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +41.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Vietnam (-9.7%) and Hong Kong SAR (-28.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, India, Pakistan and Japan increased by +26, +16, +10 and +2.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), India ($X) and Vietnam ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 74% of total imports. Japan, Pakistan, Hong Kong SAR and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 17%.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +45.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 1.5% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
