In 2022, purchases abroad of planes, chisels and gouges for working wood increased by 1.6% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In value terms, gouges and chisels imports reached $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Indonesia was the major importer of planes, chisels and gouges for working wood in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 27% of total imports in 2022. Australia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 10% share, followed by the Philippines (9.4%), Malaysia (7.8%), India (7%), Vietnam (5.2%), Thailand (5%) and Myanmar (4.6%). At the same time, China (+14.3%), New Zealand (+9.8%), Vietnam (+7.8%), India (+5.0%), the Philippines (+2.7%), Malaysia (+2.4%) and Japan (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2022. South Korea, Singapore and Myanmar experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (-1.5%) and Thailand (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+2.8 p.p.), India (+2.8 p.p.), the Philippines (+2.3 p.p.), China (+2.3 p.p.) and Malaysia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Indonesia (-12.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X), Indonesia ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 47% of total imports. Malaysia, South Korea, India, Vietnam, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, China, the Philippines and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 45%.

Among the main importing countries, New Zealand, with a CAGR of +9.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.6%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 28% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+8.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
