The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, polyethylene in primary forms exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 21% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Korea (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) represented roughly 66% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (4.9%) and Japan (4.6%). China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +8.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest polyethylene in primary forms supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were South Korea ($X), Singapore ($X) and Malaysia ($X), with a combined 70% share of total exports. China, Taiwan (Chinese) and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.

Among the main exporting countries, China, with a CAGR of +9.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of polyethylene in primary forms, when their volume decreased by -14.1% to X tons. Total imports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 21%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, polyethylene in primary forms imports expanded sharply to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 17%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

China prevails in imports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 51% of total imports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 9.1% share, followed by India (7.3%), Singapore (7.3%), Malaysia (4.9%) and Indonesia (4.5%). Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to polyethylene in primary forms imports into China stood at +6.3%. At the same time, Vietnam (+10.7%), Pakistan (+9.6%), Malaysia (+5.7%) and Indonesia (+4.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +10.7% from 2012-2021. India and Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China and Vietnam increased by +6.8 and +3.6 percentage points, respectively.
