In 2022, shipments abroad of potato chips increased by 17% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after two years of decline. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, potato chips exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +69.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

China was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 31% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 9.3% share, followed by Malaysia (9.2%), Pakistan (9.2%), the Philippines (5.9%), Japan (5.9%), Hong Kong SAR (5.5%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (5.1%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to potato chips exports from China stood at +8.6%. At the same time, the Philippines (+82.3%), Japan (+21.4%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+18.1%), Thailand (+18.0%) and Pakistan (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +82.3% from 2012-2022. Hong Kong SAR experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Malaysia (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+13 p.p.), Thailand (+7 p.p.), the Philippines (+5.9 p.p.), Japan (+4.8 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Hong Kong SAR and Malaysia saw its share reduced by -1.6% and -36.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 44% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia, Taiwan (Chinese), the Philippines and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 34%.

The Philippines, with a CAGR of +89.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -4.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -3.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.4%.
