The Asia-Pacific primary cell and battery market expanded remarkably to $X in 2022, surging by 5% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
Production of Primary Cells and Batteries in Asia-Pacific
In value terms, primary cell and battery production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

After four years of growth, overseas shipments of primary cells and batteries decreased by -8.5% to X units in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 181% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, primary cell and battery exports shrank to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 13%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.
Exports by Country
China dominates exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 81% of total exports in 2022. Hong Kong SAR (X units) held a 5.4% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Singapore (4.7%). Japan (X units), Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to primary cell and battery exports from China stood at +1.0%. At the same time, Singapore (+11.2%), Indonesia (+5.4%), Japan (+3.5%) and Thailand (+3.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +11.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Singapore (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest primary cell and battery supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 50% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Indonesia, with an 11% share.
In China, primary cell and battery exports increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+0.9% per year) and Indonesia (+4.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 129% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Primary Cells and Batteries
Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2022, supplies from abroad of primary cells and batteries decreased by -7% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 7.3% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then fell in the following year.
In value terms, primary cell and battery imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 13%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the three major importers of primary cells and batteries, namely Hong Kong SAR, Japan and China, represented more than half of total import. India (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.4% share, followed by Malaysia (5.1%). The following importers - South Korea (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), Vietnam (X units), Australia (X units), Singapore (X units), Thailand (X units) and Indonesia (X units) - together made up 24% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +19.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest primary cell and battery importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Malaysia ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and China ($X), together accounting for 42% of total imports. Vietnam, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), India and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 51%.
Vietnam, with a CAGR of +19.9%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, growing by 3.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 7.1%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per unit), while India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
