After two years of decline, the Asia-Pacific propellant powders market increased by 1% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, propellant powders production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, overseas shipments of propellant powders increased by 7.4% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports showed a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, propellant powders exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) was the major exporter of propellant powders, comprising 56% of total exports. Australia (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (11%), Pakistan (4.8%) and Thailand (4.6%).

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to propellant powders exports from China stood at +16.5%. At the same time, Thailand (+303.4%) and Pakistan (+24.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +303.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Australia (-4.0%) and Japan (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China, Thailand and Pakistan increased by +40, +4.6 and +4 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, China ($X) emerged as the largest propellant powders supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 40% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Australia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to +12.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Australia (-1.3% per year) and Japan (-11.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+24.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, purchases abroad of propellant powders increased by 32% to X tons for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a mild shrinkage. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, propellant powders imports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Korea (X tons) and Japan (X tons) represented the largest importers of propellant powders in Asia-Pacific, together amounting to near 55% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by the Philippines (X tons), China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 32% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lao People's Democratic Republic (with a CAGR of +35.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 67% of total imports. These countries were followed by Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Lao People's Democratic Republic, which together accounted for a further 24%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +34.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -18.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a mild slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
