In 2021, the Asia-Pacific sliding pencil market increased by 4.8% to $X, rising for the second year in a row after six years of decline. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the sixth consecutive year, Asia-Pacific recorded decline in shipments abroad of propelling or sliding pencils, which decreased by -14.3% to X units in 2021. Overall, exports saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sliding pencil exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which recorded 74% of total exports. India (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (11%). Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sliding pencil exports from China stood at -9.5%. At the same time, India (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Japan (-4.8%) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-4.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India and Japan increased by +9.6 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X), China ($X) and Taiwan (Chinese) ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 93% share of total exports.

Taiwan (Chinese), with a CAGR of -1.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per unit), while India (less than $X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in overseas purchases of propelling or sliding pencils, when their volume increased by 2.9% to X units. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 15%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Japan (X units), China (X units), South Korea (X units) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) was the major importer of propelling or sliding pencils in Asia-Pacific, constituting 64% of total import. It was distantly followed by Malaysia (X units) and Thailand (X units), together comprising a 15% share of total imports. India (X units), Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X units), Hong Kong SAR (X units), Singapore (X units) and Australia (X units) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Democratic People's Republic of Korea (with a CAGR of +37.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Japan ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 65% of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese), Hong Kong SAR, Australia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Democratic People's Republic of Korea and India lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, with a CAGR of +32.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 15% against the previous year. Import price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sliding pencil import price increased by +100.5% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 28%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while India ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
