China (X tons) remains the largest rabbit meat producing country in Asia-Pacific, accounting for 77% of total volume. Moreover, rabbit meat production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in China amounted to -4.3%.

In 2022, the average rabbit meat yield in Asia-Pacific reached X kg per head, remaining relatively unchanged against 2021 figures. In general, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the number of producing animals, however, saw a noticeable shrinkage. For the fifth consecutive year, Asia-Pacific recorded decline in overseas shipments of rabbit or hare meat, which decreased by -7.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports saw a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 62% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rabbit meat exports contracted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 41%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, China (X tons) represented the major exporter of rabbit or hare meat in Asia-Pacific, making up 100% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rabbit or hare meat exports, with a CAGR of -10.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) also remains the largest rabbit meat supplier in Asia-Pacific.

In 2022, purchases abroad of rabbit or hare meat increased by 64% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 173%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, rabbit meat imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Japan (X tons) was the largest importer of rabbit or hare meat, mixing up 47% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Singapore (15%) and Hong Kong SAR (12%). New Caledonia (X tons), Macao SAR (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to rabbit meat imports into Japan stood at +3.6%. At the same time, the Philippines (+45.9%), Singapore (+33.1%) and Macao SAR (+25.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +45.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, New Caledonia (-4.0%), Hong Kong SAR (-5.3%) and Vietnam (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Japan, Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, the Philippines and New Caledonia increased by +35, +15, +5.7, +4.7, +2.4, +1.8 and +1.5 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rabbit or hare meat in Asia-Pacific, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Vietnam, with a 7% share.

In Japan, rabbit meat imports increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Singapore (+23.1% per year) and Vietnam (-8.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -9.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 97%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Macao SAR (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
