In 2021, overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of bovine animals decreased by -1.9% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after six years of growth. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -31.7% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin exports amounted to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) were the main exporters of raw hides and skins of bovine animals in 2021, recording approx. 39% and 27% of total exports, respectively. Australia (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (11%). Thailand (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, rising by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 13%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cows skin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Japan (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the major importers of raw hides and skins of bovine animals in 2021, amounting to approx. 29% and 25% of total imports, respectively. Thailand (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by China (9.8%), India (7.9%), Cambodia (7.3%) and Australia (5.3%).

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
