Overall, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the cattle hide and skin yield attained the peak level at X kg per head in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the yield failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, the number of animals slaughtered for cattle hide and skin production in Asia-Pacific totaled X heads, increasing by 1.6% against 2020 figures. This number increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the number of producing animals increased by 4.7%. In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of raw hides and skins of cattle, when their volume increased by 5.1% to X tons. Overall, exports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 9.9%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cattle hide and skin exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Australia represented the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which amounted to 55% of total exports. New Zealand (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Japan (7.8%), China (7%) and South Korea (5.3%). The following exporters - Vietnam (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cattle hide and skin exports from Australia stood at -5.8%. At the same time, South Korea (+37.0%), Vietnam (+13.3%), China (+7.8%), New Zealand (+4.4%) and Japan (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +37.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Afghanistan (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Australia totaled -9.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Zealand (-4.5% per year) and Japan (-8.2% per year).

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 27% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decline. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, cattle hide and skin imports in Asia-Pacific fell slightly to X tons, dropping by -1.7% against 2020. In general, imports saw a slight setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 7.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

At the same time, Indonesia (+10.0%) and Japan (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Indonesia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +10.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-2.6%) and South Korea (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +13 percentage points.
