Exports in Asia-Pacific

After two years of growth, overseas shipments of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) decreased by -15.6% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 146% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports rose notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 213% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Malaysia was the key exporter of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was approx. 39% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Japan (8%), Singapore (7.3%), China (6.9%), Indonesia (6.5%) and Australia (4.7%).

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) exports, with a CAGR of +34.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Japan (+16.0%), Indonesia (+8.4%), Australia (+5.5%) and Vietnam (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Malaysia and Japan increased by +34 and +3.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were Japan ($X), Vietnam ($X) and Singapore ($X), together accounting for 54% of total exports. Malaysia, Australia, China and Indonesia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Malaysia, with a CAGR of +32.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 25% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 27% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+5.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, the amount of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) imported in Asia-Pacific rose sharply to X tons, surging by 9.4% on the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +7.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +14.6% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 64% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports stood at $X in 2021. Total imports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +7.5% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the ten major importers of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated), namely South Korea, China, Australia, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, the Philippines and Indonesia, represented more than two-thirds of total import.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Indonesia (with a CAGR of +27.8%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($X), Australia ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 65% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +20.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, leveling off in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
