Rum Market Size in Asia-Pacific

The total consumption indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.0% over the last decade. In 2022, rum exports in Asia-Pacific rose markedly to X litres, surging by 6.3% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports showed a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 54% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, rum exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +18.1% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

In 2022, India (X litres) represented the key exporter of rum, comprising 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by the Philippines (X litres), Singapore (X litres) and Australia (X litres), together generating a 27% share of total exports.

Exports from India increased at an average annual rate of +13.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, the Philippines (+18.7%) and Australia (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the Philippines emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +18.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Singapore (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+35 p.p.) and the Philippines (+11 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Singapore saw its share reduced by -11.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X), Singapore ($X) and the Philippines ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 76% share of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, the Philippines, with a CAGR of +31.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per litre in 2022, with an increase of 17% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 50% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per litre), while India ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+10.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, supplies from abroad of rum was finally on the rise to reach X litres for the first time since 2017, thus ending a four-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable downturn. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rum imports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
