In value terms, smoked herring exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 4,944%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Myanmar (X tons), creating an 8.2% share of total exports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the smoked herrings exports, with a CAGR of +165.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+49.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China and Myanmar increased by +88 and +7.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

At the same time, Brunei Darussalam (+18.9%) and New Caledonia (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Brunei Darussalam emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +18.9% from 2012-2022. French Polynesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, New Zealand (-8.3%), Malaysia (-8.9%) and South Korea (-27.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Australia (+21 p.p.), New Caledonia (+8.4 p.p.) and Brunei Darussalam (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Korea saw its share reduced by -31.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Australia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported smoked herrings in Asia-Pacific, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by New Caledonia ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by New Zealand, with a 6.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Australia amounted to -2.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: New Caledonia (+1.7% per year) and New Zealand (-5.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.3% against the previous year. Import price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was French Polynesia ($X per ton), while Brunei Darussalam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
