The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 33% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

In value terms, spark plug exports reached $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 26%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Japan represented the key exporter of sparking plugs in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports amounting to X units, which was approx. 57% of total exports in 2022. China (X units) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (9.2%). The following exporters - Indonesia (X units) and India (X units) - together made up 4.4% of total exports.

Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of sparking plugs. At the same time, Thailand (+32.3%), India (+13.2%), Indonesia (+12.0%) and China (+6.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +32.3% from 2012-2022. Thailand (+8.4 p.p.), China (+7.8 p.p.) and Indonesia (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Japan saw its share reduced by -15.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) remains the largest spark plug supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 15% share.

In Japan, spark plug exports expanded at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+8.8% per year) and Thailand (+35.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the export price increased by 7.1% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Thailand ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

Spark plug imports shrank to X units in 2022, which is down by -2.2% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, spark plug imports dropped slightly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +62.5% against 2015 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

China was the largest importing country with an import of about X units, which accounted for 37% of total imports. India (X units) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Thailand (7%), Australia (5.2%) and Malaysia (4.7%). Singapore (X units), Bangladesh (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), South Korea (X units), Indonesia (X units), Vietnam (X units) and Japan (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spark plug imports into China stood at +5.9%. At the same time, India (+21.0%), Bangladesh (+8.0%), Singapore (+6.1%), Indonesia (+2.3%) and Japan (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +21.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Thailand (-1.9%), Australia (-3.2%), Malaysia (-3.6%), Vietnam (-6.0%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-6.1%) and South Korea (-7.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of India and China increased by +15 and +9.3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sparking plugs in Asia-Pacific, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Australia ($X), with an 8% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 5.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +9.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Australia (-0.4% per year) and Thailand (+0.3% per year).
