The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 28%. Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, overseas shipments of stuffed pasta and couscous increased by 6.3% to X tons, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +72.0% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, pasta and couscous exports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +103.6% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

China represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 41% of total exports. South Korea (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Indonesia (11%), Thailand (9.5%) and Vietnam (7.7%). The following exporters - Malaysia (X tons) and Japan (X tons) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pasta and couscous exports from China stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Japan (+14.5%), South Korea (+14.5%), Vietnam (+13.2%), Thailand (+6.7%), Indonesia (+3.7%) and Malaysia (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Japan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +14.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Korea and Vietnam increased by +9.8 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), South Korea ($X) and Thailand ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 69% of total exports. Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 22%.

Vietnam, with a CAGR of +15.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the export price increased by 15%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+2.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, the amount of stuffed pasta and couscous imported in Asia-Pacific surged to X tons, jumping by 29% compared with the year before. In general, imports recorded a buoyant increase. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, pasta and couscous imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Malaysia represented the major importer of stuffed pasta and couscous in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 31% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Hong Kong SAR (X tons), China (X tons), Australia (X tons) and Japan (X tons), together comprising a 40% share of total imports. The Philippines (X tons), Singapore (X tons), New Zealand (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and India (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to pasta and couscous imports into Malaysia stood at +14.1%. At the same time, India (+20.4%), Indonesia (+14.9%), China (+14.8%), Vietnam (+13.8%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+9.2%), Australia (+8.5%), Singapore (+7.0%), the Philippines (+6.4%), Japan (+6.4%), Hong Kong SAR (+4.2%) and New Zealand (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Malaysia (+13 p.p.) and China (+4.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of New Zealand (-2.6 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-6.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X), Australia ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Malaysia, Japan, Singapore, New Zealand, Taiwan (Chinese), Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 38%.

India, with a CAGR of +24.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 11%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+6.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
