The country with the largest volume of sugar beet production was China (X tons), comprising approx. 71% of total volume. Moreover, sugar beet production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tons), twofold.

In China, sugar beet production shrank by an average annual rate of -1.7% over the period from 2012-2022.

In 2022, the average sugar beet yield in Asia-Pacific surged to X tons per ha, growing by 20% compared with the previous year. In general, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the yield increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the sugar beet yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of sugar beet production in Asia-Pacific contracted slightly to X ha, dropping by -3% against the previous year. In general, the harvested area continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the harvested area increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to sugar beet production attained the maximum at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, approx. X tons of sugar beet were exported in Asia-Pacific; which is down by -53.2% against the previous year's figure. Overall, exports continue to indicate a pronounced descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 134% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 167%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China was the major exporting country with an export of around X tons, which reached 53% of total exports. Vietnam (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Malaysia (18%) and India (4.9%).

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sugar beet exports from China stood at -1.3%. At the same time, India (+34.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +34.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-1.6%) and Vietnam (-1.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of China, India, Vietnam and Malaysia increased by +8.2, +4.8, +2.7 and +2.3 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest sugar beet supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 61% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Malaysia, with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in China amounted to +3.2%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (-2.0% per year) and Malaysia (-5.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 37% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a perceptible increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 44% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, overseas purchases of sugar beet were finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sugar beet imports surged to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +73.6% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, New Zealand (X tons) was the key importer of sugar beet, committing 82% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Singapore (X tons), generating a 16% share of total imports.

New Zealand was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sugar beet imports, with a CAGR of +21.7% from 2012 to 2022. Singapore (-3.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of New Zealand (+82 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Singapore (-23.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, New Zealand ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sugar beet in Asia-Pacific, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Singapore ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in New Zealand stood at +23.9%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 4.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 11%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while New Zealand stood at $X per ton.
