Frozen Sweet Corn Market Size in Asia-Pacific
For the fifth consecutive year, the Asia-Pacific frozen sweet corn market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -7.9% to $X in 2021. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 6.6% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Frozen Sweet Corn Production in Asia-Pacific
In value terms, frozen sweet corn production shrank modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 5.6%. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2021 were New Zealand (X tons), China (X tons) and Thailand (X tons), with a combined 66% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Thailand (with a CAGR of +4.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Frozen Sweet Corn Exports
Exports in Asia-Pacific
For the fifth year in a row, Asia-Pacific recorded growth in overseas shipments of frozen sweet corn, which increased by 17% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +54.8% against 2016 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, frozen sweet corn exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China was the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which reached 35% of total exports. Thailand (X tons) took a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by India (18%), New Zealand (14%) and Vietnam (6.7%). Malaysia (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +66.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), New Zealand ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 71% of total exports. India, Vietnam, Malaysia and Pakistan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 27%.
Among the main exporting countries, Pakistan, with a CAGR of +58.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 63% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Vietnam (+1.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Frozen Sweet Corn Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, purchases abroad of frozen sweet corn was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, frozen sweet corn imports rose to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Japan represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 50% of total imports. China (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Australia (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Singapore (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 36% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of frozen sweet corn. At the same time, Taiwan (Chinese) (+29.8%), Vietnam (+21.6%) and Singapore (+8.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Taiwan (Chinese) emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +29.8% from 2012-2021. Hong Kong SAR and China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Australia (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Taiwan (Chinese) (+3.7 p.p.), Singapore (+2.2 p.p.) and Vietnam (+2.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Japan and Australia saw its share reduced by -3.8% and -5.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported frozen sweet corn in Asia-Pacific, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Australia, with an 8.5% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Japan was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: China (-0.5% per year) and Australia (-3.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 1.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 7.3%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Vietnam ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+3.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
