The Asia-Pacific sugary soft drink market reduced slightly to $X in 2022, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 20%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, sugary soft drink exports rose markedly to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +35.1% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

The shipments of the twelve major exporters of sugary soft drinks, namely Malaysia, South Korea, New Zealand, China, Thailand, Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, India and Singapore, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +19.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest sugary soft drink supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were New Zealand ($X), South Korea ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 47% share of total exports. Malaysia, Australia, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, India, Singapore and Bangladesh lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 47%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, India, with a CAGR of +28.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per litre, rising by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 8.6% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per litre), while Bangladesh ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After ten years of growth, supplies from abroad of sugary soft drinks decreased by -3.3% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 20%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X litres in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, sugary soft drink imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the three major importers of sugary soft drinks, namely Cambodia, Singapore and Australia, represented more than third of total import. China (X litres) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X litres), Papua New Guinea (X litres) and Indonesia (X litres). All these countries together held approx. 24% share of total imports. The following importers - Myanmar (X litres), New Zealand (X litres), Hong Kong SAR (X litres), Macao SAR (X litres), South Korea (X litres) and Malaysia (X litres) - together made up 15% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Myanmar (with a CAGR of +32.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Australia ($X), Cambodia ($X) and China ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 53% share of total imports.

China, with a CAGR of +33.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per litre in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 6.6%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
