Table Flatware Market Size in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, the Asia-Pacific table flatware market decreased by -7.2% to $X, falling for the fourth consecutive year after two years of growth. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, table flatware production contracted slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, table flatware exports in Asia-Pacific was estimated at X tons, increasing by 3.7% on 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 31%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, table flatware exports reached $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 34% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 91% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - India (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) - each amounted to a 6.3% share of total exports.

China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of table flatware. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. India (-2.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+2.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest table flatware supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with a 5% share of total exports.

In China, table flatware exports expanded at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Vietnam (+0.6% per year) and India (+5.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, growing by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Table flatware imports rose notably to X tons in 2022, surging by 6.8% on 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, table flatware imports rose slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) represented the largest importer of table flatware, constituting 39% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Australia (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Malaysia (X tons) and India (X tons), together mixing up a 37% share of total imports. Japan (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Myanmar (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to table flatware imports into Indonesia stood at +9.3%. At the same time, Myanmar (+48.8%), Bangladesh (+22.4%), India (+12.8%), South Korea (+9.6%), Thailand (+6.0%) and Japan (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +48.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.6%), Australia (-2.6%), Malaysia (-8.5%) and Hong Kong SAR (-18.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+21 p.p.), South Korea (+4.1 p.p.), Thailand (+3.8 p.p.), India (+3.2 p.p.), Bangladesh (+2.9 p.p.) and Myanmar (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Australia, Malaysia and Hong Kong SAR saw its share reduced by -4%, -10.4% and -10.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest table flatware importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Australia ($X), South Korea ($X) and Japan ($X), with a combined 47% share of total imports. Indonesia, Taiwan (Chinese), Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Hong Kong SAR, India and Myanmar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +30.1%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 63%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
