In value terms, asphalted paper exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports recorded a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Malaysia represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 52% of total exports. It was distantly followed by China (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons), together achieving a 38% share of total exports. The following exporters - South Korea (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) - each amounted to a 4.2% share of total exports.

Malaysia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard exports, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Korea (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Pakistan (-12.9%), Taiwan (Chinese) (-17.8%) and Indonesia (-22.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Malaysia and China increased by +46 and +15 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Malaysia ($X) remains the largest asphalted paper supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by China ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Malaysia amounted to +8.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: China (+2.2% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-17.8% per year).

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -11.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted measured growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 52%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Pakistan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Indonesia (+3.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard increased by 39% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total imports indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 50%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, asphalted paper imports amounted to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Myanmar (X tons) represented the key importer of tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard, comprising 58% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), Cambodia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons), together committing a 30% share of total imports. Japan (X tons) and Vietnam (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Myanmar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tarred, bituminised or asphalted paper and paperboard imports, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Cambodia (+21.8%), Vietnam (+5.4%) and Thailand (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Japan (-6.1%), Indonesia (-11.9%) and Malaysia (-12.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. In value terms, the largest asphalted paper importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Thailand ($X), Myanmar ($X) and Indonesia ($X), together comprising 70% of total imports. Malaysia, Cambodia, Japan and Vietnam lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 20%.

Cambodia, with a CAGR of +20.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -25.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
