The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Tobacco Production in Asia-Pacific
In value terms, tobacco production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 17%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, the amount of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) exported in Asia-Pacific stood at X tons, remaining relatively unchanged against 2020 figures. Overall, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 11%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, tobacco exports expanded markedly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
India represented the largest exporter of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 30% of total exports in 2021. Malaysia (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by China (11%), the Philippines (10%), Indonesia (10%), South Korea (8.5%) and Pakistan (8.1%).
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tobacco exports from India stood at +2.5%. At the same time, Pakistan (+49.7%), Indonesia (+19.1%), the Philippines (+13.9%) and South Korea (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Pakistan emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +49.7% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Malaysia (-7.0%) and China (-11.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Indonesia (+8.2 p.p.), Pakistan (+7.9 p.p.), India (+7.4 p.p.), the Philippines (+7.3 p.p.) and South Korea (+5.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Malaysia and China saw its share reduced by -9.5% and -19.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, India ($X) remains the largest tobacco supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 36% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 7.8% share.
In India, tobacco exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+18.8% per year) and China (-10.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 8.5% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.9%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 13%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Tobacco Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff), when their volume increased by 6.7% to X tons. Total imports indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -12.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tobacco imports totaled $X in 2021. Overall, imports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 110%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Japan (X tons) was the major importer of tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff), generating 31% of total imports. Indonesia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by South Korea (X tons), China (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Afghanistan (X tons), Cambodia (X tons) and Myanmar (X tons). All these countries together took near 51% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tobacco imports into Japan stood at +16.7%. At the same time, Myanmar (+38.7%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+22.0%), Cambodia (+5.4%), the Philippines (+5.3%) and Afghanistan (+4.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +38.7% from 2012-2021. China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-1.1%) and Indonesia (-2.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Myanmar and the Philippines increased by +22, +4.6, +4.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tobacco (smoking tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff) in Asia-Pacific, comprising 80% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with a 2.7% share of total imports. It was followed by South Korea, with a 2.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Japan stood at +64.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+38.7% per year) and South Korea (+2.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 70% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
