In 2021, the Asia-Pacific sportswear market decreased by -9.4% to $X, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, consumption saw a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sportswear production rose to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 4.8%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, approx. X units of track suits, ski suits and swimwear were exported in Asia-Pacific; with an increase of 27% compared with 2020. Total exports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +93.1% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, sportswear exports soared to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
China represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which accounted for 68% of total exports. Vietnam (X units) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Cambodia (4.7%) and Bangladesh (4.6%). The following exporters - Sri Lanka (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units) - each accounted for a 6.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to sportswear exports from China stood at +1.8%. At the same time, Vietnam (+11.5%), Bangladesh (+9.3%), Cambodia (+6.5%) and Sri Lanka (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Vietnam emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +11.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Hong Kong SAR (-13.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Vietnam (+7.1 p.p.), China (+3.4 p.p.), Bangladesh (+2.3 p.p.) and Cambodia (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Hong Kong SAR (-9.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest sportswear supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Vietnam ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Cambodia, with a 6.9% share.
In China, sportswear exports increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Vietnam (+14.3% per year) and Cambodia (+15.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 7.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, sportswear export price increased by +12.2% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 52% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per unit), while China ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cambodia (+8.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, supplies from abroad of track suits, ski suits and swimwear decreased by -0.8% to X units, falling for the eighth year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 4.3%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sportswear imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Australia (X units) and Hong Kong SAR (X units) represented the main importers of track suits, ski suits and swimwear in Asia-Pacific, together accounting for near 58% of total imports. Japan (X units) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.3% share, followed by South Korea (7.8%), Singapore (5.3%) and China (4.6%). Thailand (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +31.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest sportswear importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Australia ($X), Hong Kong SAR ($X) and South Korea ($X), together comprising 66% of total imports. Japan, Singapore, China and Thailand lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 23%.
Among the main importing countries, Thailand, with a CAGR of +14.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Korea ($X per unit), while Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
