In 2021, the Asia-Pacific wallpaper market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

Wallpaper Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, wallpaper production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a modest expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Wallpaper Exports

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, wallpaper exports in Asia-Pacific surged to X tons, growing by 16% compared with the year before. Total exports indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +59.0% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, wallpaper exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -9.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

China dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Korea (X tons), making up an 8.8% share of total exports. Japan (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the wallpaper and wall coverings exports, with a CAGR of +12.1% from 2012 to 2021. Japan (-3.6%) and South Korea (-7.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of China increased by +32 percentage points.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest wallpaper supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports.

In China, wallpaper exports expanded at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (-7.6% per year) and Japan (-3.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Korea (+0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, overseas purchases of wallpaper and wall coverings increased by 33% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wallpaper imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India was the main importer of wallpaper and wall coverings in Asia-Pacific, with the volume of imports recording X tons, which was near 31% of total imports in 2021. Indonesia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Malaysia (X tons), China (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Pakistan (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 46% share of total imports. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), the Philippines (X tons), Bangladesh (X tons), Japan (X tons) and Australia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into India increased at an average annual rate of +22.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Bangladesh (+28.3%), Pakistan (+22.3%), Australia (+9.3%), Japan (+8.0%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.6%), Malaysia (+4.0%), the Philippines (+3.9%) and Thailand (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Bangladesh emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Indonesia (-2.3%), Singapore (-6.8%), Hong Kong SAR (-7.6%) and China (-16.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. India (+26 p.p.), Pakistan (+5 p.p.), Malaysia (+3.9 p.p.), Thailand (+1.8 p.p.), Bangladesh (+1.8 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+1.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR and China saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.3%, -2.4% and -33% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, India ($X), China ($X) and Malaysia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 45% of total imports. These countries were followed by Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan (Chinese), Australia, Pakistan and Bangladesh, which together accounted for a further 45%.

Bangladesh, with a CAGR of +33.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible contraction. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
