Wine Market Size in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific wine market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. In general, consumption recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Wine Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, wine production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a noticeable reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 72% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2021, approx. X litres of wine were exported in Asia-Pacific; which is down by -16.2% compared with the previous year. In general, exports saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 7.6%. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wine exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 12%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Australia (X litres) was the major exporter of wine, creating 66% of total exports. It was distantly followed by New Zealand (X litres), committing a 29% share of total exports. Singapore (X litres) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to wine exports from Australia stood at -4.6%. Singapore and New Zealand experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. New Zealand (+8.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Australia saw its share reduced by -9.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest wine supplying countries in Asia-Pacific were Australia ($X), New Zealand ($X) and Singapore ($X), with a combined 90% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, New Zealand, with a CAGR of +3.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per litre, growing by 21% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per litre), while Australia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by New Zealand (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of decline, purchases abroad of wine increased by 3.5% to X litres in 2021. Overall, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, wine imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

China represented the major importing country with an import of around X litres, which accounted for 38% of total imports. Japan (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Australia (X litres), South Korea (X litres) and Singapore (X litres). All these countries together took approx. 44% share of total imports. The following importers - New Zealand (X litres) and Hong Kong SAR (X litres) - each reached an 8.1% share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest wine importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Japan ($X), China ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X), together accounting for 62% of total imports. These countries were followed by Singapore, Australia, South Korea and New Zealand, which together accounted for a further 28%.

Among the main importing countries, South Korea, with a CAGR of +9.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per litre, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 16%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Hong Kong SAR ($X per litre), while New Zealand ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
