The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood charcoal exports rose sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) represented the key exporter of wood charcoal, committing 38% of total exports. India (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 16% share, followed by Vietnam (12%), the Philippines (9.6%), China (7%), Myanmar (5.8%) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (5.6%).
Exports from Indonesia increased at an average annual rate of +7.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Lao People's Democratic Republic (+37.3%), Vietnam (+35.9%), the Philippines (+29.9%), India (+22.7%) and China (+3.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Lao People's Democratic Republic emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +37.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Myanmar (-8.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of India, Vietnam, the Philippines and Lao People's Democratic Republic increased by +11, +10, +9.6 and +5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Indonesia ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 71% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the Philippines, Lao People's Democratic Republic, India and Myanmar, which together accounted for a further 23%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a CAGR of +43.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 5.2% against the previous year. Over the last nine-year period, it increased at an average annual rate of +5.2%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+12.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the amount of wood charcoal imported in Asia-Pacific totaled X tons, growing by 5.1% against 2020. Total imports indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -15.0% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 52%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood charcoal imports totaled $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 37%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, China (X tons), distantly followed by Bhutan (X tons), Japan (X tons), India (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) represented the main importers of wood charcoal, together creating 88% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in India (with a CAGR of +34.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest wood charcoal importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Japan ($X), China ($X) and Bhutan ($X), with a combined 66% share of total imports. South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and India lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 18%.
Among the main importing countries, India, with a CAGR of +32.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a slight decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 8.3%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
