Cotton Fabric Market Size in Asia-Pacific
For the fourth consecutive year, the Asia-Pacific cotton fabric market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -0.6% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Cotton Fabric Production in Asia-Pacific
In value terms, cotton fabric production expanded to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, production reached the peak level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific
In 2021, exports of woven fabrics of cotton in Asia-Pacific surged to X tons, increasing by 20% on the year before. Total exports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -10.6% against 2016 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 67% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cotton fabric exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 75% of total exports in 2021. Pakistan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by India (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 16% share of total exports. The following exporters - Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) - each finished at a 4% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cotton fabric exports from China stood at +4.2%. At the same time, India (+29.3%) and Pakistan (+21.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, India emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +29.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Thailand (-3.6%) and Hong Kong SAR (-6.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of India (+6.4 p.p.) and Pakistan (+6.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Thailand (-1.8 p.p.), China (-2.7 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-3.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest cotton fabric supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Pakistan, with an 11% share.
In China, cotton fabric exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+8.4% per year) and Pakistan (+3.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (-1.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Cotton Fabric Imports
Imports in Asia-Pacific
After two years of decline, overseas purchases of woven fabrics of cotton increased by 21% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 47%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cotton fabric imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Bangladesh (X tons) represented the largest importer of woven fabrics of cotton, committing 43% of total imports. Vietnam (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Indonesia (X tons), Cambodia (X tons), South Korea (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), China (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons). All these countries together took near 44% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to cotton fabric imports into Bangladesh stood at +5.8%. At the same time, Cambodia (+11.3%), Sri Lanka (+4.7%) and South Korea (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cambodia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia-Pacific, with a CAGR of +11.3% from 2012-2021. Indonesia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-1.6%), Vietnam (-2.2%) and Hong Kong SAR (-5.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Bangladesh and Cambodia increased by +12 and +3.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Bangladesh ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported woven fabrics of cotton in Asia-Pacific, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Vietnam ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Indonesia, with a 7% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Bangladesh stood at +4.3%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Vietnam (+1.6% per year) and Indonesia (-3.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia-Pacific amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 7.2% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
