China prevails in exports structure, accounting for X square meters, which was approx. 78% of total exports in 2021. Japan (X square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by India (X square meters). All these countries together held near 13% share of total exports. South Korea (X square meters), Vietnam (X square meters) and Hong Kong SAR (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to silk fabric exports from China stood at -10.6%. Vietnam experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Japan (-4.9%), India (-10.6%), South Korea (-14.6%) and Hong Kong SAR (-23.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of China (+3.3 p.p.), Japan (+3.1 p.p.) and Vietnam (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Korea (-1.5 p.p.) and Hong Kong SAR (-5.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest silk fabric supplier in Asia-Pacific, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan, with a 6.3% share.

In China, silk fabric exports shrank by an average annual rate of -10.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (-6.7% per year) and Japan (-11.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per square meter in 2021, approximately reflecting the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 37%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per square meter), while Vietnam ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Hong Kong SAR (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of woven fabrics of silk or of silk waste was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a deep contraction. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Sri Lanka (with a CAGR of +11.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X), Japan ($X) and Hong Kong SAR ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 46% of total imports. Sri Lanka, South Korea, India, China and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.

Sri Lanka, with a CAGR of +15.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per square meter in 2021, growing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the import price increased by 18% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2020 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sri Lanka ($X per square meter), while Malaysia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
