Yams Market Size in Asia-Pacific

The Asia-Pacific yams market declined modestly to $X in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Yams Production in Asia-Pacific

In value terms, yams production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a perceptible contraction. Papua New Guinea (X tons) remains the largest yams producing country in Asia-Pacific, accounting for 57% of total volume. Moreover, yams production in Papua New Guinea exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Japan (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Solomon Islands (X tons), with a 6.7% share.

In Papua New Guinea, yams production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Japan (+0.2% per year) and Solomon Islands (-0.0% per year).

In 2022, the average yams yield in Asia-Pacific dropped slightly to X tons per ha, approximately equating the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the yield increased by 5.2%. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of yams production in Asia-Pacific reached X ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the harvested area increased by 4.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to yams production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of yams, when their volume decreased by -5.1% to X tons. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +12.1% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, yams exports totaled $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +18.9% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of yams, namely China, India and Japan, represented more than two-thirds of total export. Tonga (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Afghanistan (with a CAGR of +36.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X), Japan ($X) and India ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 88% share of total exports. Vietnam, Tonga, Afghanistan and Malaysia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9.1%.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Afghanistan, with a CAGR of +29.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 7.5% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tonga (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Asia-Pacific

In 2022, overseas purchases of yams decreased by -8.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +9.8% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, yams imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 22%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Malaysia (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) was the major importer of yams in Asia-Pacific, generating 68% of total import. Pakistan (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Japan (6.6%). Macao SAR (X tons) and China (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Pakistan (with a CAGR of +177.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest yams importing markets in Asia-Pacific were Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), Japan ($X) and Singapore ($X), together comprising 74% of total imports. Malaysia, Pakistan, Macao SAR and China lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 17%.

Pakistan, with a CAGR of +166.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia-Pacific stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 9.4%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Pakistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
