The Asian passenger car market dropped slightly to $X in 2021, shrinking by -3.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, Pakistan (X units) represented the main importer of passenger cars, achieving 45% of total imports. China (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by the United Arab Emirates (X units), Saudi Arabia (X units) and South Korea (X units). All these countries together took near 25% share of total imports. Turkey (X units), Japan (X units), Israel (X units), Taiwan (Chinese) (X units) and the Philippines (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Pakistan was also the fastest-growing in terms of the passenger cars imports, with a CAGR of +22.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Korea (+11.3%), Taiwan (Chinese) (+8.0%) and the United Arab Emirates (+3.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Israel and Japan experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, China (-2.0%), Turkey (-2.4%), Saudi Arabia (-3.4%) and the Philippines (-5.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Pakistan (+35 p.p.) and South Korea (+2.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-1.6 p.p.), the Philippines (-2.4 p.p.), Turkey (-2.6 p.p.), Saudi Arabia (-4.9 p.p.) and China (-6.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported passenger cars in Asia, comprising 35% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Saudi Arabia, with a 7.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +1.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (+12.3% per year) and Saudi Arabia (-3.2% per year).
