Patent Leather Market Size in Asia

The Asian patent leather market amounted to $X in 2021, growing by 14% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of patent leather, patent laminated leather and metallised leather, when their volume increased by 17% to X square meters. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X square meters in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, patent leather exports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 28%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Korea represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X square meters, which accounted for 41% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Taiwan (Chinese) (X square meters), China (X square meters), Vietnam (X square meters) and Hong Kong SAR (X square meters), together achieving a 57% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Vietnam (with a CAGR of +29.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Korea ($X) remains the largest patent leather supplier in Asia, comprising 44% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Taiwan (Chinese) ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 15% share.

In South Korea, patent leather exports shrank by an average annual rate of -7.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Taiwan (Chinese) (+4.9% per year) and China (+9.3% per year).

The purchases of the four major importers of patent leather, patent laminated leather and metallised leather, namely China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Indonesia and the Philippines, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Bangladesh (X square meters) held a 4.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cambodia (4.6%). Hong Kong SAR (X square meters) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cambodia (with a CAGR of +28.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported patent leather, patent laminated leather and metallised leather in Asia, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Indonesia ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Lao People's Democratic Republic, with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China amounted to -11.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Indonesia (+6.6% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (-24.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per square meter in 2021, picking up by 4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 19%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per square meter), while the Philippines ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Philippines (+32.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
