Persimmon Market Size in Asia

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Asian persimmon market, when its value decreased by -2.2% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then reduced in the following year.

Persimmon Production in Asia

In value terms, persimmon production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a strong expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +48.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the production volume increased by 29%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

The country with the largest volume of persimmon production was China (X tons), accounting for 79% of total volume. Moreover, persimmon production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, South Korea (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Japan (X tons), with a 4.9% share.

In China, persimmon production increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-6.0% per year) and Japan (-2.6% per year).

In 2021, the average yield of persimmons in Asia amounted to X tons per ha, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the yield increased by 4.8%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the persimmon yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2021, approx. X ha of persimmons were harvested in Asia; remaining relatively unchanged against 2020 figures. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, recorded mild growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 5.2%. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to persimmon production reached the maximum at X ha in 2020, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

Exports in Asia

In 2021, the amount of persimmons exported in Asia reduced to X tons, shrinking by -14.4% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, posted a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon exports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 50%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Azerbaijan was the main exporter of persimmons in Asia, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 55% of total exports in 2021. China (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Uzbekistan (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 35% share of total exports. Georgia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from Azerbaijan increased at an average annual rate of +5.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, China (+14.3%) and Georgia (+9.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, China emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Uzbekistan (-14.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Uzbekistan (+12 p.p.) and China (+9.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Azerbaijan (-8.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Azerbaijan ($X), China ($X) and Uzbekistan ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

China, with a CAGR of +20.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -13.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 16%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Georgia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Uzbekistan (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of persimmons decreased by -32.3% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 76%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

In value terms, persimmon imports shrank significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

Vietnam was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which amounted to 42% of total imports. Kazakhstan (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Thailand (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Armenia (X tons). All these countries together held near 39% share of total imports. The following importers - Saudi Arabia (X tons) and Malaysia (X tons) - each resulted at a 6.1% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Armenia (with a CAGR of +138.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported persimmons in Asia, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with an 8.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Kazakhstan, with an 8.5% share.

In Vietnam, persimmon imports expanded at an average annual rate of +25.0% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+13.0% per year) and Kazakhstan (-5.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, approximately equating the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.4%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton), while Armenia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
