Pistachio Market Size in Asia

The Asian pistachio market declined to $X in 2022, which is down by -1.8% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption increased by +3.2% against 2020 indices. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 65%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The country with the largest volume of pistachio production was Iran (X tons), accounting for 46% of total volume. Moreover, pistachio production in Iran exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Turkey (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by China (X tons), with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Iran stood at +2.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Turkey (-3.0% per year) and China (+0.9% per year).

The average pistachio yield expanded rapidly to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 5.4% on the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 93%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the pistachio yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pistachios production in Asia contracted rapidly to X ha, with a decrease of -22.4% against the previous year's figure. In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of pistachios, when their volume decreased by -61.2% to X tons. In general, exports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 36% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, pistachio exports plummeted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

Iran was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which recorded 51% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Turkey (X tons), comprising a 28% share of total exports. Hong Kong SAR (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), China (X tons), Syrian Arab Republic (X tons) and Afghanistan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +26.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pistachio supplying countries in Asia were Iran ($X), Turkey ($X) and the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a combined 85% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Turkey, with a CAGR of +24.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 28% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.5%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Afghanistan ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pistachio imports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 19%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest levels of pistachio imports in 2022 were China (X tons), Turkey (X tons), India (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Pakistan (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons), together resulting at 78% of total import. Israel (X tons), Japan (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons), Yemen (X tons) and Kazakhstan (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Turkey (with a CAGR of +265.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest pistachio importing markets in Asia were China ($X), Turkey ($X) and India ($X), together comprising 53% of total imports.

Turkey, with a CAGR of +227.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 3.3% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Kazakhstan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
