For the tenth consecutive year, Asia recorded growth in shipments abroad of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip, which increased by 11% to X tons in 2021. Total exports indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +64.6% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 12%. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, exports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China was the key exporter of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip in Asia, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 36% of total exports in 2021. South Korea (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.2% share, followed by Turkey (7.8%), India (6.2%), Japan (6.2%), Malaysia (6.1%), Taiwan (Chinese) (5.6%) and Thailand (5.1%).

Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +9.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Turkey (+12.5%), India (+6.8%), Thailand (+5.0%), Malaysia (+4.4%), South Korea (+4.2%) and Japan (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Turkey emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +12.5% from 2012-2021. Taiwan (Chinese) experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of China (+8.6 p.p.) and Turkey (+3.3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Japan (-2.8 p.p.) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-3.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest plastic plate, sheet, film, foil and strip supplying countries in Asia were China ($X), Japan ($X) and South Korea ($X), together accounting for 63% of total exports.

China, with a CAGR of +10.5%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, surging by 9.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In 2021, China (X tons), followed by Japan (X tons), South Korea (X tons), India (X tons), Vietnam (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Indonesia (X tons) and Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) represented the main importers of plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip, together making up 71% of total imports. Thailand (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and Singapore (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Vietnam (with a CAGR of +13.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, China ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported plastic plates, sheets, film, foil and strip in Asia, comprising 33% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Korea ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 7.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +2.0%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Korea (-4.1% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (-1.0% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight setback. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
