The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Pakistan (X tons), China (X tons), India (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Iran (X tons) and Israel (X tons) represented the key exporter of potatoes in Asia, generating 80% of total export. Azerbaijan (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Iran (with a CAGR of +15.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, China ($X), Pakistan ($X) and Israel ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together comprising 53% of total exports. India, Iran, Turkey and Azerbaijan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 29%.
Iran, with a CAGR of +20.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -11.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 25%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

Uzbekistan (X tons) and Nepal (X tons) represented roughly 26% of total imports in 2021. Azerbaijan (X tons) took a 7.6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Malaysia (6.5%), Vietnam (6.3%), the United Arab Emirates (5.6%) and Syrian Arab Republic (5.2%). Afghanistan (X tons), Iraq (X tons), Sri Lanka (X tons), Thailand (X tons), Oman (X tons) and Saudi Arabia (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

In value terms, the largest potato importing markets in Asia were Vietnam ($X), Uzbekistan ($X) and Nepal ($X), together comprising 29% of total imports. Malaysia, Azerbaijan, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Thailand, Syrian Arab Republic, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Oman lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.
Azerbaijan, with a CAGR of +29.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the import price increased by 15% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while Uzbekistan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
