In 2021, the Asian propellant powders market increased by 0.9% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Asia
In 2021, overseas shipments of propellant powders were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a measured expansion. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, propellant powders exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
China represented the key exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 62% of total exports. Japan (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Kuwait (6.7%), Pakistan (5.3%) and Thailand (5.1%). Iran (X tons) and Turkey (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Exports from China increased at an average annual rate of +16.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Thailand (+303.4%), Pakistan (+24.2%) and Iran (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Thailand emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +303.4% from 2012-2021. Kuwait experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Turkey (-4.2%) and Japan (-11.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. China (+41 p.p.), Kuwait (+6.7 p.p.), Thailand (+5.1 p.p.), Pakistan (+4.3 p.p.) and Iran (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Turkey and Japan saw its share reduced by -1.9% and -36.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, China ($X) remains the largest propellant powders supplier in Asia, comprising 47% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in China totaled +12.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-11.7% per year) and Thailand (+402.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, flattening at the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a perceptible descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 7.6%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Turkey ($X per ton), while Kuwait ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Thailand (+24.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
After four years of decline, purchases abroad of propellant powders increased by 28% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, propellant powders imports rose rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the four major importers of propellant powders, namely South Korea, Japan, Israel and Turkey, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Indonesia (X tons), the Philippines (X tons) and China (X tons), together making up a 16% share of total imports. Thailand (X tons), Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons), Bhutan (X tons) and India (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Bhutan (with a CAGR of +48.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest propellant powders importing markets in Asia were Japan ($X), South Korea ($X) and China ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Turkey, Israel, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Lao People's Democratic Republic, India and Bhutan, which together accounted for a further 41%.
Among the main importing countries, Bhutan, with a CAGR of +34.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -13.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 13% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped in the following year.
