Pumpkin Market Size in Asia

The Asian pumpkin market expanded slightly to $X in 2022, growing by 2.2% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, pumpkin production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -5.4% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were China (X tons), India (X tons) and Turkey (X tons), together accounting for 79% of total production. Bangladesh, Indonesia, Pakistan, South Korea and the Philippines lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 13%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Bangladesh (with a CAGR of +7.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average pumpkin yield in Asia shrank modestly to X tons per ha, approximately reflecting 2021 figures. Overall, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1.5% against the previous year. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of pumpkin (squash and gourds) production in Asia contracted modestly to X ha, remaining relatively unchanged against the year before. In general, the harvested area, however, continues to indicate a modest increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 4.8%. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In 2022, shipments abroad of pumpkin (squash and gourds) decreased by -12.8% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Overall, exports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

In value terms, pumpkin exports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 27%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Turkey (X tons) was the key exporter of pumpkin (squash and gourds), comprising 51% of total exports. Malaysia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 11% share, followed by Iran (9.4%), China (6.3%), Myanmar (5.5%) and India (5.4%). Oman (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Turkey increased at an average annual rate of +11.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Myanmar (+117.8%), Iran (+43.6%), India (+27.8%) and Oman (+27.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Myanmar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +117.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malaysia (-2.5%) and China (-5.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Turkey, Iran, Myanmar, India and Oman increased by +13, +8.9, +5.5, +5.4 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Turkey ($X) remains the largest pumpkin supplier in Asia, comprising 58% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with an 8% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 7.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Turkey amounted to +11.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: India (+48.7% per year) and China (+6.4% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 7.9% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.1%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while Myanmar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In general, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Japan was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 38% of total imports. Singapore (X tons) took a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Korea (9%), Qatar (7.6%), China (6%) and the United Arab Emirates (5.5%). Israel (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into Japan decreased at an average annual rate of -3.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Israel (+41.2%), China (+17.2%), Qatar (+15.7%) and the United Arab Emirates (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Israel emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +41.2% from 2012-2022. Singapore experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Korea (-2.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Qatar (+5.8 p.p.), China (+4.7 p.p.), Israel (+3.2 p.p.) and the United Arab Emirates (+2.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Korea and Japan saw its share reduced by -2.8% and -21.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported pumpkin (squash and gourds) in Asia, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Singapore ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Qatar, with a 10% share.
