The Asian rabbit meat market declined to $X in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. In general, consumption, however, showed a mild decline. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons) remains the largest rabbit meat producing country in Asia, accounting for 77% of total volume. Moreover, rabbit meat production in China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Democratic People's Republic of Korea (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in China stood at -4.3%.

The average rabbit meat yield totaled X kg per head in 2022, approximately equating 2021 figures. In general, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the yield increased by 12%. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X kg per head; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

In 2022, approx. X heads of animals slaughtered for rabbit meat production in Asia; picking up by 3% against 2021. In general, the number of producing animals, however, showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 4.2% against the previous year. For the fifth consecutive year, Asia recorded decline in overseas shipments of rabbit or hare meat, which decreased by -7.5% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports showed a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rabbit meat exports dropped to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

The biggest shipments were from China (X tons), together recording 99% of total export.

China was also the fastest-growing in terms of the rabbit or hare meat exports, with a CAGR of -10.2% from 2012 to 2022. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 146%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, rabbit meat imports surged to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 92% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Japan represented the largest importer of rabbit or hare meat in Asia, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 34% of total imports in 2022. Kuwait (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Vietnam (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and Hong Kong SAR (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 45% share of total imports. The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Yemen (X tons), Cyprus (X tons), Qatar (X tons) and Macao SAR (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to rabbit meat imports into Japan stood at +3.6%. At the same time, Singapore (+33.1%), Macao SAR (+25.4%) and Kuwait (+15.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Singapore emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Asia, with a CAGR of +33.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Cyprus (-1.5%), Hong Kong SAR (-5.3%), Vietnam (-5.8%), the United Arab Emirates (-17.6%), Yemen (-25.0%) and Qatar (-37.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Japan (+30 p.p.), Kuwait (+15 p.p.), Singapore (+10 p.p.), Vietnam (+8 p.p.), Hong Kong SAR (+6.1 p.p.), Cyprus (+2.1 p.p.) and Macao SAR (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Yemen and Qatar saw its share reduced by -5.9% and -37.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Japan ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported rabbit or hare meat in Asia, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kuwait ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Japan totaled +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Kuwait (+15.5% per year) and Singapore (+23.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded temperate growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 94%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Qatar ($X per ton), while Hong Kong SAR ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Qatar (+13.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
