In 2021, the Asian non-decaffeinated roasted coffee market decreased by -8.5% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. The total consumption indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -12.8% against 2019 indices. In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -17.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 29%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Non-Decaffeinated Roasted Coffee Exports
Exports in Asia
After two years of growth, shipments abroad of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) decreased by -4.6% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 129% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 183%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Malaysia represented the main exporter of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) in Asia, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was approx. 28% of total exports in 2021. Vietnam (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by the United Arab Emirates (8.7%), Turkey (7.7%), Japan (5.6%), Singapore (5.1%), China (4.8%), Lebanon (4.7%) and Indonesia (4.5%). Armenia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from Malaysia increased at an average annual rate of +34.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, the United Arab Emirates (+41.6%), Turkey (+27.7%), Japan (+16.0%), Indonesia (+8.4%), Lebanon (+3.2%) and Vietnam (+1.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, the United Arab Emirates emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Asia, with a CAGR of +41.6% from 2012-2021. Armenia and China experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Singapore (-6.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Malaysia (+23 p.p.), the United Arab Emirates (+7.8 p.p.), Turkey (+5.8 p.p.) and Japan (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lebanon, Armenia, China, Vietnam and Singapore saw its share reduced by -3.2%, -3.5%, -6.5%, -11.4% and -15.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee supplying countries in Asia were Japan ($X), the United Arab Emirates ($X) and Vietnam ($X), together comprising 39% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, the United Arab Emirates, with a CAGR of +56.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Asia amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 23%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the United Arab Emirates (+10.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Asia
In 2021, the amount of roasted coffee (not decaffeinated) imported in Asia skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 27% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 71%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 44%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of non-decaffeinated roasted coffee imports in 2021 were South Korea (X tons), China (X tons), Israel (X tons), the United Arab Emirates (X tons), Saudi Arabia (X tons), Turkey (X tons), Japan (X tons), Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), Malaysia (X tons), Singapore (X tons), Hong Kong SAR (X tons) and the Philippines (X tons), together resulting at 83% of total import.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Saudi Arabia (with a CAGR of +24.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest non-decaffeinated roasted coffee importing markets in Asia were South Korea ($X), China ($X) and Japan ($X), together comprising 47% of total imports. These countries were followed by Israel, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan (Chinese), Turkey, Singapore, Hong Kong SAR, Malaysia and the Philippines, which together accounted for a further 39%.
In terms of the main importing countries, Saudi Arabia, with a CAGR of +25.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Asia stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 9.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Japan (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
